Time Mastery in the age of Knowledge workers

How do we deal with 400 issues at the same time?

The top selling business books usually have something about leadership, something about strategy, and something about time. Most of these titles talk about 'time management' but in the last decade, the state of the art has moved away from traditional lists, priorities, and schedules to strategies that take into account a person's strengths and weaknesses, personality, behavioral styles, and cultural heritage.

Classic "Time Management" strategies do not work any more.

If we are in leadership, management, or knowledge work, we have over 400 outstanding issues (on average) running around in our heads, according to David Allen. Allen calls these issues "open loops," which leech our energy and come to the forefront of our mind at the worst times: when we can't do anything about them.

It is impossible for us to manage those hundreds of items with traditional lists, priorities, planning, and scheduling.

"Time Mastery" works better because it is personalized.

'Time Mastery' is much more fluid than classic time management. It looks at how we use time, and what we are good at and not so good at, and it links all of that to our personality, behavioral style, and cultural heritage. It is a pragmatic discovery tool that cuts across cultures and behavioral styles, and helps me connect to the key focus areas that I should focus on in my current job. See the article on Time, Cultural Perspective and Behavioural Styles.

The Time Mastery approach is a quick win, because with a half-day of Time Mastery training and one or two intensive coaching sessions, a lot of progress can be made in a very short time.
